Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming numerous aspects of our lives. Its innovations come with both enormous opportunities and risks, and Rutgers faculty, staff, and students hold a wide range of perspectives related to its use. The breadth of these viewpoints should be acknowledged and respected. Our research and scholarship should be at the forefront of advancing the technology and its applications as well as its responsible and ethical use. The education we provide should help students excel during their time at Rutgers and into their futures. This includes fostering an understanding of the potential, limitations, risks, and dangers of AI while continuing to develop the core skills that we embrace as a School of Arts and Sciences, including communication, critical thinking, problem solving, and creativity (whether generated through words, code, images, or other forms of expression). We are sharing the information below to facilitate understanding of the rapidly evolving AI landscape and its applications at Rutgers, and to stimulate dialogue regarding the use of AI by the SAS community.
The School of Arts and Sciences (SAS) Computer Replacement Cycle (CRC) provides a planned, school-funded, consistent, equitable, and sustainable process for replacing the primary computers used by eligible SAS faculty and staff. The program is designed to keep supported equipment current, make purchasing and deployment more predictable, use school funds equitably, maintain an accurate inventory of university-owned devices, and reduce the administrative burden associated with managing aging equipment. SAS IT administers the program in consultation with school leadership and determines eligibility, replacement schedules, inventory records, purchasing, deployment, reuse, and retirement of returned equipment.
Rutgers University provides two distinct email systems: ScarletMail and Rutgers Connect. These systems serve different purposes and are intended for different user groups within the Rutgers community. ScarletMail is primarily for students, while Rutgers Connect (a.k.a. Microsoft 365) is designated for employees. This document outlines the proper use of each email account, highlighting how students who have accounts on both systems should manage their accounts and follow university policies regarding communication.
